The short answer

Website development in India costs anywhere from ₹10,000 to ₹10,00,000+ depending on the type of website, the agency or freelancer you hire, and what features you need. The range is large because the category is large — a 5-page brochure site is fundamentally different from a full e-commerce platform with inventory management.

This guide breaks down the real cost by website type, tells you what affects the price, and explains what you should watch out for when getting quotes.

Website development cost by type

Website TypePrice RangeTimelineBest For
Basic Business Website₹12,000 – ₹40,0002–3 weeksSmall businesses, consultants, clinics, shops
Corporate Website₹40,000 – ₹1,20,0004–6 weeksMid-size businesses, manufacturers, B2B companies
E-commerce Website₹50,000 – ₹3,00,0006–12 weeksRetail businesses, FMCG brands, online stores
NGO Website₹15,000 – ₹60,0002–4 weeksRegistered NGOs, trusts, foundations
College Website + Management System₹1,00,000 – ₹4,00,0003–6 monthsColleges, universities, educational institutions
Custom Web Application / SaaS₹2,00,000 – ₹10,00,000+3–8 monthsStartups, enterprises, funded businesses

What determines the cost of a website in India?

1. Number of pages and features

A 5-page brochure site costs far less than a 50-page corporate website with a blog, product catalog, and customer portal. Every feature adds development time.

2. Custom design vs. template

Templates (ThemeForest, Envato) cost ₹5,000–15,000 and are adapted to your brand. Custom designs built from scratch cost more but are unique and optimised for your audience.

3. Who builds it — agency vs. freelancer

A freelancer charges less (₹8,000–50,000) but carries higher risk: delays, poor handover, no support after delivery. An agency charges more (₹25,000–3,00,000+) but offers accountability, fixed timelines, and post-launch support.

4. E-commerce features

Payment gateway integration (Razorpay, Paytm), GST invoicing, inventory management, and order tracking all add significant development time and cost.

5. CMS and admin panel

If you need to update content yourself without a developer, you need a CMS (WordPress, custom admin panel). This adds to the build cost but saves money long-term.

6. Integrations

Connecting to Tally, Zoho, shipping APIs (Shiprocket), WhatsApp Business, or third-party systems adds development time and cost.

Fixed price vs. hourly billing — which is better?

Most website development projects in India should be fixed price. Here's why:

  • You know the total cost before work begins — no bill shock
  • The agency absorbs any underscoping errors, not you
  • Milestones and deliverables are clearly defined upfront
  • Easier to budget for a capital expenditure

Hourly billing makes sense for ongoing maintenance work, not fixed-scope projects. Be cautious of agencies that quote hourly for a new website build — the final bill is often significantly higher than the estimate.

Red flags when getting website quotes in India

No written scope document

If the agency cannot produce a written list of deliverables before you pay, walk away.

Monthly retainer to 'host' your website

You should own your code. Agencies that charge monthly fees to 'maintain' a website you haven't launched yet are locking you in.

Extremely low prices

A ₹5,000 website is almost always a Wix / Squarespace account with your logo pasted on it. Not a real website.

No portfolio with live links

Ask to see live client websites. Screenshots can be faked. Live sites cannot.

Vague timelines

'2–4 months' is not a timeline. Demand weekly milestones and a delivery date in writing.
